چکیده

We report on the structure of the scalar index-of-refraction field generated by turbulent, gas-phase, incompressible and compressible shear-layers and incompressible jets, and on associated beam-propagation aero-optical phenomena. Using simultaneous imaging of the optical-beam distortion and the turbulent-flow index-ofrefraction field, wavefront-phase functions were computed for optical beams emerging from the turbulent region in these free-shear flows, in an aero-optical regime producing weak wavefront distortions. Spatial wavefront-phase behavior is found to be dominated by the large-scale structure of these flows. A simple level-set representation of the index-of-refraction field in high Reynolds number, incompressible shear layers is found to provide a good representation of observed wavefront-phase behavior, indicating that the structure of the unsteady outer boundaries of the turbulent region provides the dominant contributions.

Numerical investigation of thermal mixing of shear thinning fluids in one-way opposing jets

In recent years, impinging streams have received increasing interest for their high efficiency in heat and mass transfer. This numerical study was conducted to investigate flow and heat transfer characteristics of one-way opposing jets of non-Newtonian fluids. Effects of Reynolds number impinging angle, momentum ratio and flow behavior index on mixing index were evaluated. The results showed im...

Experimental study and numerical simulation of three dimensional two phase impinging jet flow using anisotropic turbulence model

Hydrodynamic of a turbulent impinging jet on a flat plate has been studied experimentally and numerically. Experiments were conducted for the Reynolds number range of 72000 to 102000 and a fixed jet-to-plate dimensionless distance of H/d=3.5. Based on the experimental setup, a multi-phase numerical model was simulated to predict flow properties of impinging jets using two turbulent models. Mesh...

Heat Transfer under Double Turbulent Pulsating Jets Impinging on a Flat Surface

In this study, the numerical analysis of turbulent flow and heat transfer of double pulsating impinging jets on a flat surface has been investigated. The unsteady two-dimensional numerical solution for two similar and dissimilar jets was performed using the RNG k-ε model. The results showed that the RNG k-ε model has more satisfactory predictions of the Nusselt number distribution. Comparisons ...

Some issues on turbulent mixing and turbulence∗

Recent data on turbulent mixing suggest that the mixing transition, previously documented to occur in shear layers, also occurs in jets, as well as many other flows, and can be regarded as a universal phenomenon. The resulting, fullydeveloped turbulent flow requires a minimum Reynolds number of Re ≈ 104, or a Taylor Reynolds number of ReT ≈ 102, to be sustained. Turbulent mixing in this fully-d...

Stability analysis of stratified two-phase liquid-gas flow in a horizontal pipe

This study aimed at linear stability analysis of the stratified two-phase liquid-gas flow in a horizontal pipe. First, equations governing the linear stability of flow in each phase and boundary conditions were obtained. The governing equations were eigenvalue Orr Sommerfeld equations which are difficult and stiff problems to solve. After obtaining the velocity profiles of the gas and liquid ph...
